Pueblo 5/19 to 5/22

Wore out, so just going to post notes. I love the campsite, we stayed at #52 in Arkansas loop, might try 53 next time if possible. It looks a little more private. Arkansas loop is super close to the South boat ramp.

  • when water was flat calm snapping plastics did not work - seemed better with worms then
  • when wind picked up I could search for pods of 3-6 fish and catch a few pretty much everytime
  • caught a 19.5" super close to the bank
  • Jigging rap was working well in 20mph winds
  • Lost a LOT of gear. Looking into weed guards and Texas rigging - skin hooking.
  • Spent way way too much time tying leaders, hoping weed guards and Texas rigging will help with this, if not I might need to ditch braid for PLO - Also, maybe a barrel swivel.. the hope would be the floro would break off and I could just retie to the barrel swivel.
  • Use a shorter leader - 3' ?
  • Big fish really like shallow
  • SMB seems to be getting more active
  • Need to try different styles of working soft plastics - snap and pendulum, tiny snaps, draging etc
  • Water temp mid to high 60s
  • Broke the tips of 3 rods!! (Me one, Diane two)
  • Fished with Russ and Chris.

Granby May 16-18

Granby opened the boat ramp on Friday. 3 weeks after ice out. Water temp was about 59. Water coming up fast. First day caught a fat 30"er and a 27" and a 25". Total for the day was 21. Next day I caught a 34". Few other decent ones. 15 for the day. Last day was slow, nothing to get excited about.

Found fish right on a drop off in A-Bay. About 47-50 FOW. Also found lots of smaller fishing holding in 60ish FOW.

My neighbor has an awesome house right on Shadow Mountain Reservoir. He let us stay there for 3 days for free!

Spinney 5/2 and 5/3

Spinney just opened for the season. It's also one of the few places that are open for camping right now. We decided to go up for the weekend. Saturday we hit the lake at 5:30am. My boat was last exit inspected at Pueblo a few weeks ago. When they sealed it up they must not have attached the seal completely because it was gone when I arrived at Spinney. Thankfully the inspector let me in with a quick visual inspection.

We launched the boat and drove to the north west end. Started fishing in 11ish FOW over sparse weeds. We were throwing 2.75" green tubes and working them like jerk baits. Starting catching fish immediately. Mostly really fat Cutbows and Rainbows with a few Pike and Browns. We also threw blades and did some vertical jigging. Managed 43 fish by 3pm, 3 master angler sized Cutbows.

Sunday was kind of a bust. It was a lot colder, cloudy, and windy. We fished from about 6am to 10:30. Managed 7 fish, couple of fat Rainbows and some Pike.

Misc Update

Last few short trips I have hit Geanos reef and Oconto. Geanos reef was a bust. Marked nothing all day, but did see people musky fishing on ...
